⚠️ Urgent: New EU legislation effective June 19, 2026 – Is your online store ready for the mandatory cancellation button?
A major legal change is on the horizon, and the deadline is fast approaching. Starting June 19, 2026 (exactly 8 days from now!), the new EU Directive 2023/2673 will take effect. Do you sell to European consumers? If so, starting on that date, you will be legally required to have an electronic withdrawal button on your website.
This is not a regulation you can simply ignore. Enforcement (particularly by Germany) will begin immediately. If you don’t comply, online stores risk fines of up to 4% of their annual turnover, or the return period for customers will be automatically extended from 14 days to 12 months and 14 days.
In short, what does the law entail?
Consumers should be able to initiate a return with a single click from their order page. No hassle with mandatory logins, no mandatory contact forms, and no need to call customer service. Canceling should be just as easy as making a purchase. In addition, an automatic confirmation email should be sent immediately.
The Problem with Shopify & Odoo Online
Many business owners assume that their e-commerce platform handles this by default. Nothing could be further from the truth:
Shopify doesn't have this built in natively. You'll need plugins for this (such as Revoq or Retractly).
Odoo (On-Premise / Sh) requires a custom module.
Odoo Enterprise Online (SaaS): You cannot install external apps from the app store here. Many Odoo Online users are now at a loss.
