Odoo Inventory Is a Mess: A Concrete Step-by-Step Plan for Automated Inventory Valuation & Landed Costs.

A while back, a supply chain manager called us in a panic. They had been using Odoo for a year, but their implementation partner had forgotten to enable “Automated Inventory Valuation.”

Is your B2B business struggling with incorrect inventory valuations in Odoo?
The lack of automated inventory valuation and landed costs causes operational chaos in your warehouse and financial administration. Fixing historical errors through code only creates massive technical debt.

Learn here how to effectively restore your Odoo ERP architecture with a clean break. Rebuild a reliable central database and enable scalable workflow automation for your procurement and logistics.

The inventory value didn’t match the balance sheet, and they couldn’t post customs costs (Landed Costs) for their shipping containers. The client suggested hiring a developer to “bypass” the restrictions in the code in order to adjust the history.

We immediately pulled the emergency brake: tampering with the Odoo stock valuation layers via code is financial suicide. Here’s how we actually solved it.

Why you should NEVER rewrite history in Odoo
If you have a “brownfield” database (a live environment with existing transactions), it’s impossible to simply enable features like Tracking (Batches/Serial Numbers) or Landed Costs. Odoo deliberately blocks this. This is because the stock_valuation_layer module is inextricably linked to your journal entries (account_move).

If you modify these data rules using scripts, you’ll create a gap in your balance sheet that no accountant will be able to explain.

The Concrete Step-by-Step Plan: The Hard Cut-Off

To resolve this without destroying your database, use the architectural flow below:

Step 1: Write Off Inventory (Zero-out)

Use the Inventory Adjustments app to set the physical inventory of all problematic SKUs to 0. Odoo will now properly post the incorrect value to your inventory variance account.

Step 2: Configure Categories for Landed Costs
Landed Costs (such as freight and customs fees) will only work if the underlying Product Category is set up exactly as follows:

  • Inventory Valuation: Automated

  • Cost Accounting: AVCO (Average Cost) or FIFO.

  • Link your general ledger accounts here (Inventory Receipts, Inventory Issues, Inventory Valuation).

Step 3: Resolving the Tracking Issue
Because Odoo does not allow you to enable tracking (Lot/Serial) on products with existing quants (inventory movements), you must archive the old product. Create a new product (duplicate it and give it a new Internal Reference, e.g., SKU-V2). On this new product card, enable tracking immediately and link it to the category from Step 2.

Step 4: Record Inventory Accurately
Create a new Inventory Adjustment. Scan your physical inventory for the new SKU-V2 products and—this is crucial—enter the correct purchase price (Unit Price) directly in the adjustment.

From this point on, your inventory will accurately reflect reality, your general ledger will be balanced, and you will be able to apply landed costs to every new purchase order.
